Bygone Times

I only became a 'real grown-up' in July (as I assume that is the state you take once you graduate and can go longer blame everything on being a student) but I'm already spending my weekends visiting antiques warehouses. I've also decided I need to invest in a new camera phone or a handy discreet digital camera.

Chris Doyle: This Year I Will Try Not To...

Collaboration between Chris Doyle and Elliott Scott, "...born out of frustration, complacency and laziness. Most designers are seduced by design trends. They're easy to appropriate, and even easier to imitate. The challenge is to innovate. To be new. We decided the best (and most enjoyable) approach was to identify and document the most common trends we felt we had to avoid. Before long we found ourselves with a checklist of DON'Ts and a new aim: to try to be new. We may fail, but we will try."

Wednesday 22 September

(Excuse the terrible quality of these photos, I'm afraid I don't have a multi-mega pixel HD X ray vision camera on my phone) A recent trip to London saw me killing time between interviews by paying a visit to the design museum. Took in the following: The Brit Insurance Design Awards, John Pawson: Plain Space and a very photogenic double decker bus.

In the afternoon I called into the YCN library at 72 Rivington Street. On the eyes of a first timer it was very impressive— I was like a kid in candy shop (well a graphic designer in a book shop, it amounts to the same thing). Had a good chat with the lovely lady working there and she said a lot of their books were actually in the design museum where providence has led me earlier that morning— check out the lovely rainbow of books.

JJ & The Pinks

Book design JJ & The Pinks; a short piece of writing by my old housemate about our time in Carlisle and the fictitious band JJ & The Pinks. Hand-bound, single signature pamphlet stitch, printed on to 100% recycled paper.
